Five short reads that cover the questions we hear most — no jargon, no obligation, no fine print required.

Financing for your customers

Point-of-sale financing lets a homeowner spread the cost of a project into monthly payments instead of paying the full amount up front. For a contractor, that turns a "maybe" into a signed contract — customers who finance tend to approve larger scopes. The application is quick, the credit check is a soft pull that doesn't touch the customer's score, and approved funds typically settle to you within days.

Payments & processing basics

A merchant account is simply the account that lets your business accept debit and credit cards. When a customer pays, funds go into that account and usually settle into your bank within two to three business days. Knowing how processing fees work, when funds land, and what a provider holds in reserve can save you real money and keep month-end statements a surprise-free read.

Home loans explained

Buying, refinancing, and tapping equity each work differently — and the right move depends on your goal. A purchase loan funds a home you're buying; a refinance replaces your current mortgage, often to lower your rate or change the term; a cash-out refinance or reverse mortgage turns built-up equity into cash. WeFund Home Loans, powered by GoRascal, walks through each option clearly before you commit to anything.

Understanding credit

Your credit score is a snapshot lenders use to gauge risk, built from payment history, amounts owed, length of history, new credit, and credit mix. A soft pull — like the one used for most financing pre-qualifications — doesn't affect your score; a hard pull can nudge it a few points. Checking your own credit never hurts it, and knowing where you stand before applying puts you in a stronger position.

A guide for contractors

Contractors juggle estimates, crews, and cash flow — plus the financing and payment questions that come with them. The practical version: offer financing to close bigger jobs, accept cards so customers can pay the way they prefer, watch settlement timing so payroll never surprises you, and compare providers on the numbers that matter — approval rates, fees, and funding time — before you sign anything.

Terms, decoded.

Five words you'll hear a lot in financing — explained the way we'd explain them to a neighbor.

Point-of-sale financing

Financing offered right where the buying decision happens — at the quote, the counter, or the estimate. The customer applies on the spot, gets a quick decision, and pays over time in monthly installments instead of all at once. No separate trip to a bank, and no "come back when you've saved up."

Merchant account

The business account that lets you accept debit and credit card payments. When a customer pays by card, the money moves into your merchant account first, then settles into your regular business bank account — usually within two to three business days.

HECM

Home Equity Conversion Mortgage — the most common type of reverse mortgage, insured by the federal government (FHA). It lets homeowners age 62 and older convert part of their home equity into cash without a monthly mortgage payment. Counseling is required before you can get one — and that's a good thing.

Cash-out refinance

A refinance where the new loan is larger than what you currently owe, so you receive the difference in cash. It turns some of your home equity into money you can use — for repairs, consolidating debt, or other goals — while replacing your existing mortgage with one new loan.

NMLS

The Nationwide Multistate Licensing System — the national database that tracks mortgage licenses. Every mortgage company and loan officer has an NMLS number, and you can look up anyone at nmlsconsumeraccess.org to verify they're properly licensed. Ours are on this page, in the footer.
